Reflecting on 2020

by  Katrina Morris

As I close out each year, one of my habits is to take some time and ponder the current year. This week I have been reflecting on 2020. I realized that even through a worldwide pandemic - my biggest dreams have come true! For me, it was opening my very own home decor boutique. If you have been following along this year you know we opened in Lynchburg, Virginia on March 6th. We had a successful opening weekend but the time the next weekend rolled around, COVID had stifled the world. Schools were closing, businesses were closing, and there were mandatory lockdowns happening across the U.S.

It was almost too awful to be true. I mean seriously! All this craziness the weekend after my doors opened?! All anyone could do was watch and pray that the world would open back up soon. Fast forward to today December 22, 2020, we are still in the midst of a pandemic, with nationwide shutdowns and strict mandates. Masks are the new fashion statement, you better NOT cough in public, and social distancing has become the most popular term in 2020. But enough about all the negative. Chances are you already know every single one of them. However, if you are just reading this in the year 2024, my hope is that the sickness is long gone and you will have forgotten most of the crap that went along with it.

Reflecting on the positive

Let me say right now how THANKFUL I am that I was able to open the shop when I did. Had we waited even just one more weekend, it could have been a disaster. That is where my mind has to rest and although I've had to shift and pivot along the way, this year has opened so many opportunities for me. As an entrepreneur, I know that change and growth go hand in hand in hand.

As I am reflecting on 2020, I am reminded of three important tips I have used to keep my mind healthy during all of this.

  1. Looking at what I have not what I don't. Contentment is in the heart.

  2. Focus on the good that is around me and building on that.

  3. Being kind even when others aren't. Kindness goes a long way.

As I am reflecting on 2020 I realize more than anything that your mindset is key to where and how far you go. I'm a Jesus loving girl and because of His gentle reminders (see 1, 2, and 3) I've been able to thrive and push forward through the end of 2020.

This week my hope for you is to slow down and steady your heart. Look for the good and focus on what you have. We don't know what 2021 is going to bring, but we do have the opportunity to embrace it fully with a grateful heart.
