When we first envisioned creating a bold living room transformation for our studio, we wanted a space that was as vibrant and fun as it was cozy and inviting. This beautiful living room is featured in our studio downtown and is available to you all in its full design, and we would love for you all to come and experience it! We're thrilled to share how we brought this dream to life and why it's quickly become one of our favorite rooms to design and showcase.
The Power of Color Drenching
Red is not for the faint of heart, but when used thoughtfully, it can create a space that feels both daring and sophisticated. We chose a rich, saturated, matte red for the walls and ceiling, and a high-gloss trim in the same color to set the tone for the room. This bold choice instantly adds drama and warmth, making the space perfect for entertaining or relaxing.
Balancing the Boldness
To ensure the red walls didn’t overwhelm the space, we paired them with soft, neutral furnishings. The light gray armchairs provide a subtle contrast and help balance the room’s intensity. Their clean, modern lines keep the look fresh and timeless. By anchoring the room with neutral pieces, we allowed the red to remain the focal point without becoming overpowering.
Layering Texture and Pattern
Texture is key to making a bold room feel inviting. We added layers of interest with natural elements, like the greenery in the large white ceramic vase and the woven jute rug, which grounds the space. The playful zebra-patterned red velvet pillows bring in pattern and tie back to the wall color, creating a cohesive look. These modern black and white pillows add a bold touch while keeping the palette refined.
Mixing Styles
This room beautifully combines modern coastal vibes with a touch of Southern charm. The wooden sideboard adds warmth and a hint of rustic elegance, while the sleek white table lamp and sculptural decor pieces lend a contemporary edge. Mixing styles creates a layered, curated look that feels personal and approachable.
Styling Tips for a Red Room
-
Start with a statement: Choose one bold element (like red walls) and build around it with neutral and complementary tones.
-
Add texture: Natural fibers, ceramics, and greenery soften the look and add depth.
-
Play with scale: Large vases and oversized pillows create visual interest and make the room feel well-designed.
-
Keep it personal: Unique decor pieces, like the mounted antelope, add charm and character to the room. Artwork is also a great way to add personality to a space. We partnered with Sydney Durrett, a local artist here in Wilmington, to create a beautiful collection featured throughout our studio.
Final Thoughts
This red living room embodies the magic of bold design paired with thoughtful details. It’s proof that taking risks with color can result in a truly unforgettable space. Whether you’re looking to create a dramatic statement or simply want to infuse more personality into your home, don’t shy away from bold hues like red. When balanced with neutral tones and layered textures, it can be a showstopper. The result is a space that’s not just visually stunning but also functional and inviting—the perfect combination for modern living.
