When we first moved into our studio, the foyer was anything but welcoming. It was a dark, uninspiring space that felt more like an afterthought than the first impression of our space. The old carpet, lack of lighting, and outdated trim color left much to be desired. We knew this area had untapped potential to become a stunning introduction to our studio, so we decided to embark on a foyer transformation journey. Now, we’re excited to share the process and the jaw-dropping results!
The Vision
Before picking up a single paintbrush, we envisioned a space that would feel inviting, elegant, and reflective of our personal style. We wanted our foyer to set the tone for the rest of the studio — a place that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Clean lines, a neutral palette with pops of personality, and a blend of modern and timeless elements guided our design choices.
Step 1: Clearing the Canvas
We started by stripping the space down to its bare bones. The old, stained carpet was removed to make way for the original hardwood to become something brighter and more polished. We also took down the dated light fixture, which did little to illuminate the space or create ambiance. Once the old elements were gone, it was time to start building our dream foyer.
Step 2: A Hand-Painted Black and White Checker Floor
One of the most striking features of our transformation is the hand-painted black and white checker floor. This bold design choice immediately elevated the space, adding both drama and sophistication. The clean, geometric pattern serves as a timeless foundation, drawing the eye and making a statement the moment you step inside. The addition of a vibrant, patterned rug layered on top introduces even more visual interest and texture.
Step 3: Painting a New Story
Next, we focused on the walls. A soft, neutral shade provided the perfect backdrop for our design, offering both versatility and sophistication. To enhance the architectural details, we used a high-gloss trim paint. This touch of shine added a luxurious finish that reflects light beautifully. For the railings, we hand-painted them with a black, high-gloss paint from the Fine Paints of Europe, creating a striking and elegant contrast against the neutral walls.
Step 4: DIY Bead Board Stairs
To bring texture and character to the space, we installed DIY bead board along the staircase. This detail added charm and depth, perfectly complementing the checker floor. The bead board’s crisp lines and classic design elevated the stairway while seamlessly tying it into the overall aesthetic. Paired with a deep wood stain, this added touch creates the perfect amount of visual interest to a once boring staircase.
Step 5: Custom Artwork from Sydney
Custom artwork from Sydney Durrett, a local artist here in Wilmington, became a key focal point of the foyer. The bold, colorful pieces not only added personality and visual intrigue but also balanced the high-contrast elements of the checker floor and staircase with the walls. These one-of-a-kind creations make the space truly unforgettable.
Step 6: Styling with Purpose
Intentional styling brought the transformation together. A sleek, organic console table with a natural wood finish added warmth, while its surface was adorned with curated decor, including greenery, modern lamps, and subtle accents. Statement chandeliers with cascading glass elements crowned the space, providing both functionality and a touch of glamour.
The Big Reveal
The transformation was nothing short of magical. Our once-dull foyer is now a bright, welcoming space that we’re proud to show off. The hand-painted black and white checker floor, custom artwork by Sydney Durrett, DIY bead board stairs, and hand-painted high-gloss railings are just a few highlights that made this space truly special. The combination of neutral walls with high-gloss trim, layered textures, and carefully chosen decor has turned our foyer into a showstopper.
If you’re considering a foyer makeover, we hope our journey inspires you to take the leap. Remember, the foyer is the first thing guests see when they walk into your home — make it count!
